THE YARD | VENTURA, CA

The Yard in Ventura is a coffee shop within a beautiful courtyard at the rear of a building along Main Street in downtown Ventura. The developer who owns the building saw an opportunity to transform the underutilized rear area into an enclosed garden with a coffee shop and shared outdoor seating creating an oasis for locals and tourists alike. 

The three-container project consists of Humblemaker Coffee (a Southern California coffee brand) as well as a covered seating lounge and upper storage container. The upper container forms a bridge between the two lower containers and also provides a canvas for signage and a dramatic entry from the rear parking lot. The retail space features a double-story ceiling created by removing the lower container roof and upper container floor. 

In this project, we paid special attention to the finish materials and included reclaimed wood, weathered tin roof tiles, custom light fixtures, and retail display cases to create unique branding that fits the Ventura vibe. The space was further enhanced with landscaping and murals painted by a local artist.
